Trip Overview

Big Bend is LOWA's ultimate challenge. This trip takes experienced campers ages 15-18 to Big Bend National Park in far west Texas, where the Chisos Mountains meet the Chihuahuan Desert and the Rio Grande carves dramatic canyons along the Mexican border.

The centerpiece of the trip is a 3-day desert backpacking expedition with no water source along the route. Campers carry all their water from the start -- adding 20-25 extra pounds to their packs. This requires serious physical fitness, previous outdoor experience, and a positive attitude.

Hikers cover 6-8 miles per day over steep, rugged terrain in desert climate conditions, spending 5-7 hours on the trail each day. The reward is unlike anything else in LOWA: the vast, otherworldly beauty of the desert, the rushing Rio Grande, and the towering walls of Santa Elena Canyon.

Physical Requirements

This trip requires previous outdoor experience, strong physical fitness, and a positive attitude. The 3-day waterless desert backpack adds 20-25 extra pounds to your pack. Campers should be comfortable hiking 6-8 miles per day with steep climbs in hot, arid conditions.
